pro-oxidant - antioxidant balance in patients with high grade glioblastoma multiform

چکیده
background : gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors of the central nervous system. among a number of different bio-molecular events, molecular connections between oxidative stress pathways and their development is prevalent. oxidative stress is the consequence of an imbalance between pro-oxidant factors and antioxidant defense. this imbalance may lead to dna damage and changes in growth and function of cells in the brain. many evidences show that reactive oxygen species in the mammalian brain are directly responsible for cell and tissue function and dysfunction. a brain tumor is correlated with oxidative stress. in this study, we determine the pro-oxidant – antioxidant balance in patients with grade iv brain tumors (glioblastoma multiforme) by the pro-oxidant – antioxidant assay. methods : we collected sera from 50 patients with high grade (iv) glioblastoma multiform and 49 healthy subjects. the pro-oxidant - antioxidant assay was measured. results : there was a significant increase in pro-oxidant - antioxidant values in patients (158.10±85.71 hk unit) compared to the control group (74.54±33.54 hk; p=0.001. conclusion : the pro-oxidant - antioxidant balance assay can show a high level of pro-oxidants in the sera of patients with glioblastoma which indicates the presence of oxidative stress in this group.

Saffron supplements modulate serum pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance in patients with metabolic syndrome: A randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial
Objectives: We have investigated the effect of a saffron supplement, given at a dose of 100 mg/kg, on prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) in individuals with metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial design was used in 75 subjects with metabolic syndrome who were randomly allocated to one of two study groups: (1) the case group received 100mg/kg saffron ...

متن کاملbarberry administration and pro-oxidant–antioxidant balance in patients with metabolic syndrome
conclusions barberry supplementation reduces oxidative burden in patients with metabolic syndrome. results there was no significant difference between the groups regarding their baseline pab values (p = 0.32). a significant decrease in pab was observed in the barberry group (p = 0.022), whilst there was no significant change in the control group (p = 0.18). the magnitude of change in pab during...
متن کاملComparison of Prooxidant-antioxidant Balance between Patients with High Grade Gliomas (IV) and Control Group
Background & Aim: The most common primary brain tumors of the central nervous system are gliomas. Among a number of different biomolecular events, a strong relation between oxidative stress pathways and the development of this cancer has been proved. Oxidative stress (OS) is the consequence of an imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants towards pro-oxidants. The pro-oxidants cause lipid ...
متن کاملBarberry Administration and Pro-Oxidant–Antioxidant Balance in Patients With Metabolic Syndrome
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome is the constellation of several cardiometabolic risk factors, and is associated with a heightened risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) is a measure of factors that promote and control oxidative stress. PAB may also be associated with the risk factors of CHD. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the impact of supplement...
